Growing up in a world where you face racism and discrimination. How does this affect you as a young adult? Scientists wanted to find out. They studied 96 young people, around 20 years old, to see how early experiences of racial/ethnic discrimination can shape habits and affect their health.
The study looked at different types of early life discrimination, like threats or aggression due to someone's racial/ethnic background. These experiences can influence how people form habits. For example, in a noise avoidance task, participants learned to press keys to stop a loud, annoying sound. They also completed questionnaires about their experiences with discrimination, eating habits, and substance use.
Interestingly, certain types of early discrimination, especially threats and aggression, strongly influenced habitual responses. This means that exposure to racial/ethnic discrimination can lead to repetitive behaviors that might not be helpful. Also, overall discrimination exposure was linked to binge eating, but not alcohol or drug use.
This research sheds new light on how childhood stressors, like racism, can affect behavior control and health outcomes in young adults. It's crucial to understand these impacts to help prevent and manage these issues in the future.
