Rain and Relief: New Jersey Gets Needed Showers After Hot Summer
New Jersey, USAWed May 06 2026
The air over New Jersey is set to cool down after a sweltering start to May, as a cold front moves in from the west. The front brings much‑needed rain that will help ease the drought that has gripped the state since early December. A half‑inch of precipitation is forecast for southern New Jersey, with a few isolated thunderstorms possible but no major flooding or severe weather expected. The rain will arrive mainly in the afternoon and evening, keeping skies moist through Thursday before tapering off.
Despite the impending wet spell, conditions earlier in the week have raised wildfire concerns. Winds of 25 to 30 mph from the south‑southwest, combined with very dry air, have created a fire‑prone environment. The National Weather Service warned of this danger in southern New Jersey on Tuesday, and the threat will linger until evening.
Temperatures have been unusually high for early May. On Tuesday afternoon, many parts of the state reached highs in the low to mid‑80s. The cooler air mass behind the front will push temperatures back into the 60s for the rest of the week. Thursday will still carry some clouds and light showers, especially in southern and eastern areas, but by night the weather will clear.
Friday should bring a dry day with sunny skies and northwest winds. A weak low‑pressure system may stir up showers again on Saturday, with probabilities around 35% to 40% across southern New Jersey and slightly higher in the north. Forecasting this system is tricky because it remains small and its path unclear.
Sunday looks set for dry conditions again, with clear skies and temperatures climbing into the low to mid‑70s. Residents can expect a return to cooler, drier weather after a brief rainy interlude.
