Rare Iceland Encounter: When Polar Bears Come Knocking
Westfjords, IcelandFri Sep 20 2024
In the remote village of northwest Iceland, a rare polar bear sighting turned into a life-threatening encounter for a local resident. The 150-200 kilogram bear, not native to the region, was spotted rummaging through a woman's garbage, prompting her to lock herself upstairs and call for help. Luckily, the authorities were quick to respond, and the bear was ultimately shot by police after being deemed a threat.
Polar bears are not typically found in Iceland, but they do occasionally drift ashore after traveling on ice floes from Greenland. In recent weeks, many icebergs have been spotted off the north coast, making it more likely for polar bears to make landfall. While attacks by polar bears on humans are extremely rare, the loss of sea ice due to global warming has led more hungry bears to venture onto land, increasing the risk of conflicts with humans.
The Icelandic Institute of Natural History notes that polar bears are a protected species in the country, but they can be killed if they pose a threat to humans or livestock. In this case, the decision to kill the bear was made after consulting with the Environment Agency, which declined to relocate the animal.
The killed polar bear will be taken to the institute for further study, where scientists will examine its physical condition, check for parasites and infections, and evaluate the health of its organs and body fat percentage. The pelt and skull may also be preserved for the institute's collection.
