Redford‑Inspired Award Highlights Eco‑Stories in Indie Films
Los Angeles, USAWed Jun 24 2026
Film Independent has teamed up with the Redford Center to create a new prize that pays tribute to late filmmaker Robert Redford. The award, called the Robert Redford Environmental Vision Award, will reward a single American narrative film or television show that tackles environmental topics in an imaginative way.
The selection will look for stories that go beyond the usual climate crisis talk and instead offer fresh angles. Films may challenge negative narratives, expose injustices in environmental policy, or bring Indigenous and ancestral wisdom into the spotlight. They can also focus on characters who wrestle with ecological themes, showing how personal journeys intersect with larger issues.
The goal is to celebrate projects that inspire hope and real change through storytelling. “Independent filmmakers are powerful catalysts for new ideas, ” says a spokesperson from Film Independent. “This award shows that bold voices can reshape how we think about the planet. ”
The Redford Center’s executive director adds that the prize honors his namesake’s belief in storytelling as a force for change. “Redford championed underheard voices and urgent causes, ” she notes, “and this award keeps that spirit alive by recognizing work that deepens our grasp of environmental challenges and sparks action. ”
Judges will evaluate entries on originality, innovation, and diversity. They’ll favor films that keep the audience entertained while engaging them emotionally and intellectually. Works that present environmental issues as central to their plot, or through a lead character’s struggle, will receive priority.
Submissions open on August 18, with judging meetings in September and October. The award winner will be announced in December alongside other Spirit Awards nominees, and the prize will be handed out at the March 6 ceremony.
The Redford Center, founded in 2005 by Robert and James Redford, has funded over $40 million for environmental films and produced more than 40 shorts and three award‑winning documentaries.
