Religious Americans React to Trump and Pope Leo

United States, USAThu May 07 2026
A recent survey shows growing unease among U. S. voters over political leaders blending religion with power. The poll found that most Americans—including many who support the president—criticize his recent online posts, like an image that appeared to portray him as Jesus. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also faced backlash for a public prayer asking for "overwhelming violence" against enemies, which critics called dangerous. Even Trump’s strongest supporters, like White evangelicals and Catholics, showed disapproval. Some church leaders, including Pope Leo XIV, have openly clashed with the administration over immigration and military actions. While the president once framed himself as a defender of faith, these latest moves seem to be shifting opinions. Many religious voters still back Trump’s policies but now question whether his approach aligns with their values.
Pope Leo, the first U. S. -born pope, has gained respect for speaking out against war and supporting marginalized groups. His calls for peace resonate with many, including Democrats and some Republicans. However, not all Americans are familiar with him yet—43% still don’t know enough to form an opinion. Among those who do, his favorability rating is high, with many appreciating his straightforward honesty. Not everyone agrees, though. Some conservative Catholics, like Kristine Rooff, defend Trump’s policies but dismiss the pope’s progressive stances. Others, like Cindy Luna, a Hispanic Catholic Republican, see the pope as a moral voice standing up against controversial decisions. She admires his courage in challenging politicians, even when it conflicts with party lines. The survey also highlighted backlash against Trump’s fiery rhetoric, like a post suggesting a "civilization will die" during Iran negotiations. Most Americans—76%—found it alarming, showing how faith and politics often clash in unsettling ways.
