Remembering Benjamin: A Mother's Unique Tribute
Graceland, Memphis, USATue Oct 08 2024
After losing her son Benjamin, Lisa Marie Presley made the unusual decision to keep his body at home for two months. She wanted to honor him and decide on a final resting place. California law allowed this, and a helpful funeral home made it possible. She turned one of her home's guest rooms into a temporary resting place, keeping the temperature at a cool 55 degrees to preserve his body.
During this time, Lisa Marie found comfort in caring for her son. She even invited a tattoo artist to see him so they could get matching tattoos. Benjamin had his sister Riley's name inscribed on his collarbone and his mother's name on his hand. Riley got her brother’s name tattooed on her collarbone, and Lisa Marie added his name to her hand. The tattoo artist was surprised when Lisa Marie said she could show him Benjamin's tattoos himself.
Lisa Marie and Riley eventually felt Benjamin wanted to be laid to rest. They held a funeral in Malibu led by Deepak Chopra. Benjamin was buried at Graceland, alongside Elvis Presley. Later, Lisa Marie would join them.
Riley discusses her brother's mental health struggles in her mother’s memoir, which she finished after Lisa Marie’s death. Benjamin had texted his mom about feeling mentally unwell just two weeks before his death. This revelation highlights the importance of seeking help early for mental health issues.
