A recent proposal in California could change the way deported faculty continue their careers. The bill, introduced by Assemblymember Mike Gipson of Los Angeles, would let professors who are removed from the U. S. due to immigration enforcement keep teaching students through online platforms.
The legislation defines a “remote teaching arrangement” as a way for displaced teachers to carry out their duties from afar. It requires community college districts to provide distance‑learning tools so that faculty who leave the country on or after January 1, 2027 can still deliver classes and complete professional responsibilities. The goal is to keep courses running smoothly even when teachers face sudden legal challenges.
Supporters argue that the measure protects student learning. By allowing professors to work remotely, students would not lose access to important courses or experience abrupt schedule changes. The Faculty Association of California Community Colleges highlighted that continuity in instruction is crucial for student success, especially when faculty are impacted by immigration actions.
Data from the Institute for Immigration Research shows that a significant portion of U. S. teachers are immigrants, with nearly half of those teaching at the college level. This bill could therefore affect a large group of educators who might otherwise be forced to abandon their roles entirely. By keeping them connected to students, the law aims to preserve educational quality while addressing complex immigration realities.
The proposal has sparked debate about the balance between enforcing immigration laws and maintaining academic stability.
