René Redzepi Steps Down Amid Growing Calls for Change
Silver Lake, Los Angeles, CA, USAThu Mar 12 2026
The famed chef behind Copenhagen’s Noma has announced he will leave the restaurant and resign from his own nonprofit, following a wave of abuse claims that surfaced last month.
The decision comes after a New York Times report detailed alleged physical and verbal abuse in the kitchen between 2009 and 2017.
Redzepi apologized publicly but said “an apology is not enough” and took responsibility for his actions.
His departure coincides with a protest outside Noma’s Los Angeles pop‑up, where workers and activists demanded higher wages, accountability, and reparations.
The pop‑up, priced at $1, 500 per seat, began a multi‑week residency in the historic Paramour Estate.
Skeptical diners, some from inside the hospitality industry, chose to keep their reservations despite knowing the allegations.
They argued that a restaurant’s reputation should not be judged solely on its leader, and that systemic change is needed beyond individual blame.
The protest organizers plan another demonstration the following day, hoping to push for broader reforms in the food service sector.
