A recent study delved into how pharmacists view repurposing drugs to combat antimicrobial resistance. While many pharmacists know about this idea, they don't always support it. Those with higher degrees, like master's or PhDs, were more aware than those with B. Pharm. or Pharm. D. degrees. Surprisingly, pharmacists who filled fewer prescriptions daily were more aware. Experience also played a role; those with 1-5 years of experience and who filled less than 10 prescriptions daily had less favorable attitudes. The main reason for supporting drug repurposing was to lower the risk of antimicrobial resistance. However, worry about patient safety was the top concern against it. To boost support, educational sessions could help pharmacists understand how drug repurposing can aid in the fight against antimicrobial resistance and make healthcare more sustainable.
