A former college standout and former NFL player has taken a stand, criticizing the league’s handling of mental health after the death of a 25‑year‑old wide receiver.
The ex‑player, who hung up his cleats in late 2025 after a brief stint with the Steelers’ practice squad, used the platform X to say he will not hold back.
He accused teams of posting “mental health awareness” messages that are nothing more than public relations, arguing that real support only shows up when a player can contribute on the field.
The deceased receiver, who had joined the Vikings in 2025 but was sidelined by a season‑ending knee injury, died under circumstances that the league confirmed as suicide.
The player noted that teammates often fear being judged if they seek help inside a team’s offices, and he has witnessed the shift in how staff treat players who admit they are struggling.
He called for ownership, general managers and coaches to act with the same seriousness toward all staff, from quarterbacks to custodians.
In a message aimed at his former teammates, he offered himself as a listening ear: “I’m here for any of my brothers that just want to talk and shoot the s. ”
He pledged to be a lifeline for anyone who needs it.
The Vikings’ coach expressed deep sorrow, describing the player as humble, disciplined and resilient.
Other teams sent condolences: a Cardinals quarterback thanked him for sharing life, while a Raiders defensive end called him “the coldest dude I’ve ever been on the field. ”
The league’s response, however, remains a subject of debate as fans and players alike call for more tangible support structures.
