Rhys Darby's Mischievous Role in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
Fri Jul 18 2025
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is back with a twist in its third season, premiering on July 17. The show starts with an intense two-part episode, but quickly shifts to a lighter, romantic tale in “Wedding Bell Blues. ” Nurse Christine Chapel and Spock had a brief romance, but she left him heartbroken when she took a fellowship. Things get messy when she returns with a new date, Dr. Roger Korby.
Enter Rhys Darby as the mischievous alien Trelane. He appears as a Vulcan bartender to Spock but looks like himself to the audience. Trelane offers Spock a mysterious drink, leading to a wild morning where everyone thinks Spock and Chapel are married. Trelane, dressed in a flashy blue coat, uses his powers to control the situation, even turning Dr. Korby into a dog.
Trelane isn’t new to Star Trek. He first appeared in the original series episode “The Squire of Gothos, ” where he played with the Enterprise crew like toys. The showrunners chose Darby for his unique flair and ability to bring a modern twist to the character. The episode ends with Trelane’s father, voiced by John de Lancie (known for playing Q), telling him to stop playing and go home.
This episode is a fun departure from the usual Star Trek adventures. It’s a mix of romance, comedy, and a bit of chaos. For actress Jess Bush, playing a wedding scene before her own real-life wedding was a surreal experience. The episode is a lighthearted break, showing that Star Trek can be more than just serious space exploration.
