In Chicago, researchers have been trying to figure out if ride-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft are helping or hurting Black passengers. The study looked at rides before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. They found that even though drivers might cancel on Black passengers more often, it doesn't really affect wait times much. The apps can quickly rematch with new drivers, which helps. But it's not all good news.
Even if drivers treat everyone equally, where people live still makes a big difference in how long they have to wait for a ride. In Chicago, Black residents often live further from busy areas, so it takes longer for them to get picked up. The study says there are two types of discrimination at play: what drivers do and the bigger systemic issues, like where people live due to past unfair practices.
