Rising Curiosity in No‑Alcohol Drinks and Lifestyles
A team examined monthly Google search data across the United States from 2004 through 2026. They wanted to see how people were looking at non‑alcoholic drinks and health‑focused habits. The study covered a 22‑year span.
Five search phrases were chosen: three that signal a shift away from alcohol and two that point to alcohol‑free drinks. The lifestyle terms were 'quit drinking', 'Dry January', and 'sober curious'. The beverage terms were 'non alcoholic' and 'mocktail'.
Overall, interest in both categories rose steadily during the period. Searches for the drink‑related words surged after the pandemic began, showing strong upward slopes. The 'nonalcoholic' term had a beta of 0.564 with a very low p‑value, and the 'mocktail' term showed a beta of 1.103, also highly significant. Lifestyle searches stayed mostly level or grew only a little after 2020.
Seasonal looks revealed that 'quit drinking' searches hit their highest point each January. Meanwhile, 'non alcoholic' searches peaked in December. These patterns suggest that people are actively seeking ways to cut back or replace alcohol, especially around new‑year and holiday times. The data show that Google search behavior can reveal real‑time shifts in attitudes toward less drinking.
