Risk of Stroke Tied to Long‑Term Fat Burden in Older Chinese Adults
Sun Apr 05 2026
A recent study followed a large group of middle‑aged and older adults in China to see how long‑term fat around the belly affected their chances of having a stroke.
Instead of looking at just one moment in time, researchers measured a special score called METS‑VF that combines several health indicators linked to belly fat.
They tracked participants for many years, noting who developed a stroke and who did not.
The results showed that people with higher cumulative METS‑VF scores were more likely to suffer a stroke later on.
This link stayed strong even after the researchers adjusted for other risk factors such as age, sex, smoking habits and overall health.
The study highlights that monitoring metabolic stress from belly fat over time can give doctors a better idea of who might be at higher risk for stroke.
It also suggests that long‑term lifestyle changes aimed at reducing visceral fat could help lower the overall burden of stroke in this population.
