Riverside's Glowing Holiday Tradition Lights Up the Season

Riverside's Mission Inn Hotel & Spa is gearing up for its annual "Festival of Lights, " a beloved event that transforms downtown Riverside into a winter wonderland. This year, the festival kicks off the weekend before Thanksgiving, marking a shift from its previous start date. The celebration will feature millions of twinkling lights, festive displays, carnival rides, and holiday cheer, running through the end of December. The switch-on ceremony, a highlight of the event, is scheduled for 5:15 p. m. on the opening Saturday. This year, the ceremony will carry a touch of sadness, as it will be the first without Duane Roberts, the festival's founder and longtime owner of the Mission Inn, who passed away earlier this month. His widow, Kelly Roberts, who has been a key figure in the hotel's operations, is expected to be present. The festival has a rich history, dating back to 1992 when Duane Roberts started the tradition. Over the years, it has drawn hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, all eager to witness the spectacular light displays. The event was briefly paused in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic but made a triumphant return in 2022. Visitors can expect to see the century-old inn adorned with vibrant lights and hundreds of animated characters, including elves, toy soldiers, and angels. The festival also features ice skating, a Ferris wheel, live music, and plenty of food and artisan vendors. The city invests significantly in the event, with municipal funds covering decorations, entertainment, and other expenses. While the main festivities will conclude on December 31st, the lights will continue to shine through the first week of January, extending the holiday spirit into the new year. This year's festival promises to be a memorable one, honoring the legacy of its founder while bringing joy and excitement to the community.
