Rocket Lab's Big Funding Boost for Space Solar Power
Albuquerque, USAMon Nov 25 2024
You might have heard about the CHIPS and Science Act. It's a big deal in the tech world, and recently, Rocket Lab scored big time with a funding boost. The US Department of Commerce has promised up to $23. 9 million to help Rocket Lab make more space-grade solar cells. These tiny powerhouses fuel up satellites and spacecraft, like the James Webb Space Telescope and NASA's Artemis missions. The goal? To crank up production by 50% in the next three years. This means more jobs too – over 100 new ones at their Albuquerque, New Mexico plant. Rocket Lab is one of only two US companies making these crucial solar cells, so this funding is a big win for national security and space exploration.
BAE Systems also got a chunk of change, up to $35. 5 million, to update their chip-making tools. This will speed up their production for key defense programs, like the F-35 fighter jets.
