On Monday, the Kremlin firmly denied reports that U. S. President-elect Donald Trump had a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week. The call was allegedly about avoiding military escalation in Ukraine. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated, "This is completely false. No call happened. " Trump's team also chose not to comment on the matter.
The Washington Post had reported that Trump spoke with Putin from Florida on Thursday, following his election win. They cited sources who were present during the call. Trump was said to have expressed the U. S. 's desire for Russia not to escalate the conflict in Ukraine. Ukrainian officials were also unaware of any such call. "We were not informed about this call, " said Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesman for Ukraine's Foreign Ministry. This comes amid ongoing military tensions between Ukraine and Russia. On Sunday, Ukraine confirmed a major drone attack on Moscow, the largest since the conflict began over two years ago.
