NATO and Ukraine are set to have urgent discussions after Russia launched a novel hypersonic missile, the Oreshnik, in a central city. This attack escalated the long-running war, now lasting over two and a half years. The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, claimed this was retaliation for Ukraine using U. S. and British long-range missiles. Putin also asserted that Western air defense systems are no match for this new weapon. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov blamed Western countries for arming Ukraine, warning of further responses if concerns aren't addressed.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán echoed this, suggesting U. S. involvement in guiding these missiles. Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský condemned the attack, expressing full support for additional air defense systems. In Kyiv, parliament canceled a session due to security threats. The Oreshnik missile, launched from Russia's Astrakhan region, traveled at Mach 11 and carried multiple warheads. The Pentagon confirmed it's a new experimental missile. Meanwhile, Russian drones struck a residential area in Sumy, killing two and injuring 13.
