Russia's Oil Fleet Faces New Hurdles
EuropeWed May 21 2025
The European Union and Britain have taken a bold step. They have imposed new sanctions on Russia. This move comes just a day after a phone call between Trump and Putin. The leaders talked about ending the war in Ukraine. However, the call did not produce any results.
The new sanctions target Russia's "shadow fleet. " This fleet consists of around 200 ships. These ships are used to transport Russian oil around the world. This is the 17th set of sanctions imposed by the EU since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
The decision to impose sanctions was not made lightly. It came in response to recent Russian drone attacks on Ukraine. These attacks happened over the weekend. The goal of the sanctions is to increase pressure on Russia. The hope is that this pressure will lead to a ceasefire.
The European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, made a statement. She said that it is time to intensify the pressure on Russia. This pressure is necessary to bring about a ceasefire. The British Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, also made a statement. He said that delaying peace efforts will only strengthen the resolve. The resolve is to help Ukraine defend itself and to use sanctions to restrict Putin's war machine.
The sanctions were imposed without the support of the United States. This is despite intense lobbying from European leaders. The U. S. has not imposed its own sanctions on Russia. Trump had a two-hour-long phone call with Putin. During the call, he dropped his earlier insistence on a 30-day truce. He suggested that he could walk away from the negotiations entirely. The negotiations are to end the war that he once promised to end on "day one" of his second presidential term.
The U. S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, made a statement. He said that the White House would continue to push an existing bill. The bill could impose a 500% tariff on buyers of Russian oil and gas exports. However, he added that Trump believes that threatening sanctions could stop the Russians from talking. There is value in being able to talk and drive them to the table.
The situation in Ukraine is dire. Ukrainian officials reported that dozens of people were injured. The injuries were caused by Russian drone attacks on the cities of Kharkiv, Sumy, and Kyiv. Meanwhile, Moscow released footage of Putin visiting the western Russian region of Kursk. This is the first time he has visited the region since his forces regained control from Ukrainian forces.
The future role of the United States in the conflict is uncertain. Ukraine is calling for more aggressive measures against Moscow. These measures include seizing Russian assets and imposing sanctions on some buyers of Russian oil. The situation is complex and ever-changing. The hope is that the new sanctions will bring about a ceasefire and end the war.
