Samsung's Trifold Phone: A Glimpse into the Future of Folding Tech

Thu Jul 03 2025
Samsung might have spilled the beans on its upcoming trifold phone, thanks to a recent software update. Hidden animations in the One UI 8 build hint at a device with three screens and a unique folding mechanism. This gadget, possibly named the "Galaxy G Fold, " was first hinted at during Samsung's January event, where a simple sketch of a triple-screen phone was shown. The leaked animations seem to match this sketch, giving us a better idea of what's to come. The design shows a phone with three panels. The largest panel has a triple-camera setup on the back, while the middle panel is the cover display with a front-facing camera. When fully unfolded, the front-facing camera is on the right side, same as the rear cameras. The animations also show how the phone folds, with two hinges of different sizes. The left display folds inwards, and the right display folds over the top. There's a warning not to fold the right panel first, as it could damage the device. The left panel is blank on the back, allowing the right panel to fold over it smoothly. This design is different from Huawei's Mate XT, which folds in a Z-shape. The Mate XT can use one, two, or all three panels at once, but it leaves part of the screen exposed, making it more vulnerable. Samsung's design seems more protective but less versatile. Samsung's trifold phone could be a game-changer, but it's not without its challenges. The design needs to be durable and user-friendly. Only time will tell if Samsung has cracked the code on folding phones.
