San Diego's city leaders have decided to pay $30 million to the family of Konoa Wilson, a 16-year-old who was shot and killed by a police officer. This is a huge amount of money, even more than what Minneapolis paid to George Floyd's family after his death in 2020.
On January 28, Konoa was running away from someone who had shot at him in a train station. When he ran out, he came face to face with a police officer named Daniel Gold. The family's lawsuit says that Gold shot Konoa without any warning, hitting him in the back. They say Konoa was just trying to get to a safe place.
One of the city council members, Henry Foster III, got really emotional talking about this. He said he worries about his own son's safety every time he leaves the house. He also asked where the progress is in police reform since George Floyd's death. He wants the mayor and the police chief to do better.
The police department says that Officer Gold is not on regular duty right now while they investigate what happened. The lawsuit says that Gold only said he was a police officer after he had already shot Konoa.
Konoa was taken to the hospital, but he died less than an hour later. This is a sad story, and it's important to think about what could have been done differently.
