San Diego Pushes for Film‑Industry Boost

A group of union members, producers and filmmakers gathered on the lawn outside the San Diego County Administration Building to ask for more money and support for local film work. The coalition says San Diego already has talent. What it needs is the right structure to turn that skill into a steady business. A recent show filmed there for six weeks brought in almost $6. 8 million and hired 250 people. The group argues the county lacks public facilities to keep that level of work coming. “Talent alone does not build an industry, ” a union leader said. “It’s the infrastructure that matters. ” A national board member for actors mentioned California’s film tax credit program has grown from $300 million to $750 million. He said San Diego should get a share of those funds and could offer up to 35% rebates for productions that hire local crew, actors and veterans.The goal is to help people earn fair wages while doing what they love. A tax credit reduces the amount of tax owed, not just taxable income. Under the new state rules, credits go from 20% to 35%, and productions outside Los Angeles can earn even more. So San Diego projects could qualify for 40% to 45% in total credits. The county’s Communications Office said it already works with partners and departments to help films get permits and find locations. If the budget board approves a tax credit or film commission, the county will act on it. The office also noted that San Diego’s recent Oscar‑winning film was shot here, showing the area’s potential. A local entertainment company CEO reflected on past successes when stronger studio and government support existed in 2005, when the region made over $100 million a year. He believes now is the right time for San Diego to become a major creative center.
