Santa Ana Winds Fuel Malibu Fire, Displacing Residents and Celebrities
Malibu, CA, USA,Wed Dec 11 2024
A wildfire, known as the Franklin Fire, swept through Malibu, California, prompting evacuation orders for about 20, 000 people, including celebrities like Dick Van Dyke and Cher. Strong Santa Ana winds, gusting up to 40 mph, fanned the flames and pushed them south, even crossing the Pacific Coast Highway. The fire quickly grew to over 2, 800 acres, threatening homes, horse farms, and Pepperdine University. Students at the university sheltered in place as the fire burned nearby. Despite improving weather conditions, gusty winds continued, making firefighting efforts challenging. Malibu Mayor Doug Stewart noted the city's resilience, as it has experienced numerous fires in the past. Celebrities and residents alike evacuated, with Van Dyke mentioning that one of his cats, Bobo, was missing. Power was shut off to about 40, 000 customers to prevent further damage. While Malibu is known for its rich and famous residents, the Boys and Girls Club of Malibu executive director, Kasey Earnest, emphasized the need to support lower- and middle-class families who also call Malibu home.
