School boards in Pennsylvania have a big job ahead. Every year, they get a fresh start. This is not just about picking leaders. It is a chance to promise again to put students first.
Many people do not know what school boards really do. They make big decisions. But they can only do this together. No one person has all the power. This is how it should be.
The superintendent is like the coach. They do not vote. But they help the team. The board makes the rules. The superintendent makes sure they work. If they switch jobs, things get messy. And who suffers? The students.
The Pennsylvania School Boards Association says there are six main jobs for school boards. They set goals. They hire and check on the superintendent. They make policies. They create a budget. They watch how students are doing. And they decide what is taught.
But that is not all. Board members should be seen. Go to school events. Show support. Students need to see their leaders care.
The most important thing is to focus on students. Not adults. Not personal agendas. One way to do this is to listen to students. Some schools have student board members. Others have special meetings to hear from students.
The Gov. Mifflin School District did something cool. They talked to a group of high school students called the “Stang Gang. ” These students want everyone to feel included. Their talk showed how important it is to listen to students. They can teach adults a lot.
This is a time for school boards to start fresh. Work together. Be clear about roles. And most of all, focus on students. When they do this, schools get stronger. And the whole community benefits.
