School tech shouldn't replace deep learning

Back in the early 2010s, tech companies sold the idea that every student needed a personal device to succeed. The logic seemed solid: adults use smartphones and software to work faster, so why not students? Add in the idea that today’s kids are "digital natives" who learn differently, and the push for gamified lessons made sense. Who wouldn’t want learning to feel like playing?
But stacking every lesson onto a screen misses a key point—simple tools often work best. Pencils and paper help students focus without distractions. Books let them imagine worlds without a click. Meanwhile, personalized learning software, despite its flashy promises, has too often replaced deep reading with fast, shallow interactions. Not every child learns the same way, and not every lesson needs a digital upgrade.
Perhaps the biggest mistake was treating technology as the star of the show instead of just a side player. Some tools can help: typing practice, online research, or digital diagrams. But when screens become the main way students learn, something vital gets lost—real concentration, patience, and the struggle that comes with grappling with difficult ideas.
