Science Says Marijuana Is Not a Cure for Mental Health Problems
USAWed Apr 01 2026
Recent research that looked at over 50 clinical trials on marijuana for mental health found no real benefits. The studies covered conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD and opioid addiction, but none showed that cannabis helped patients in any measurable way.
This finding matches other major reviews. A January Cochrane study on THC for chronic pain said the drug had no clear pain‑relief effect. A November review in JAMA, led by researchers from UCLA, UCSF and NYU, concluded that cannabis does not work for most conditions it is marketed to treat, including acute pain and insomnia.
The lack of therapeutic evidence stands in sharp contrast to the growing number of states that allow doctors to prescribe medical marijuana. Those programs were created largely through political campaigns rather than solid science.
Meanwhile, studies show the opposite side of the story: marijuana use is linked to higher rates of serious mental illnesses. A February JAMA Health Forum paper found that people who used cannabis in the past year were twice as likely to develop psychosis or bipolar disorder, and 34 % more likely to get depression. A Canadian study in the same month showed that those with cannabis‑use disorder were over twelve times more likely to develop schizophrenia.
Other research adds weight to these concerns. In 2023, a Danish study of almost seven million people linked cannabis‑use disorder to about 30 % of young men’s schizophrenia cases. Columbia University found that teens who used marijuana, even without addiction, had two to four times higher odds of mental health problems. A 2019 Lancet paper reported a fivefold increase in psychosis risk among daily users.
These results are not new. A 1987 Lancet study of Swedish data already showed that heavy cannabis users had a six‑fold higher risk of schizophrenia. The evidence consistently points to harm rather than help.
Because the science is clear, states that now offer medical marijuana should reconsider their policies. Without reliable benefits and with documented risks, patients who suffer from PTSD, chronic pain or depression may be chasing a false promise that could worsen their health.
