The latest state test results show that one district in New York reached a 92% proficiency rate among its students on the science exam for the 2024‑2025 year. That district, located in Westchester County, tops the state list.
More than 34 other districts earned an 80% or higher score on the same test, indicating strong science performance across a broad region of the state.
In Onondaga County, the Fayetteville‑Manlius School District led with an 82% proficiency rate, placing it tied for 22nd in the state rankings.
Contrast that with the Syracuse City School District, where only 21% of students achieved a proficient score. That figure is the lowest in Onondaga County and ranks 590th out of 599 districts statewide.
The state’s science assessment is administered annually to fifth‑ and eighth‑grade students. A student is deemed proficient if they reach Level 3 or higher on the test.
