Science Under Siege: Kyiv Academy Struck by Russian Drone

A Russian drone slammed into Kyiv's National Academy of Sciences on Monday morning. The historic 19th-century building caught fire as people climbed out of upper floors to flee danger. At least one person died and three others were hurt, said Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Those injured were carried to hospitals while the president of the academy expressed shock. He stated clearly that this was an attack on science, not on military targets.

Volodymyr Horbulin, the academy's first vice-president and a former high-ranking security official, suffered injuries during the strike. His presence among the wounded highlights how deeply the institution is woven into Ukraine's defense network. Another drone later struck a private medical center nearby, resulting in at least one more fatality. President Anatoliy Zagorodny called the incident pure terrorism, emphasizing that the academy represents knowledge, not combat capability.

In the past week, Russian forces have launched a steady stream of missiles and sophisticated jet-powered drones against homes, offices, warehouses, and data centers across the capital. These ongoing raids have caused daily civilian casualties and created a pervasive sense of fear. The newer drone technology moves significantly faster and resists interception far better than older models like Shahed or Geran-2. Ukraine is actively developing its own interceptors to counter this growing threat. Moscow has adapted by increasing attacks during daylight hours to keep residents under constant alert.
