Seawell’s Family Catering Returns to State Fairgrounds

Seawell’s first opened its doors in 1946, serving the community from the fairgrounds for several decades. In the 1970s the operation shifted across the street to a new address on Rosewood Drive. The family built a dedicated venue there in 1998, turning it into a local staple for weddings, university events, and even presidential visits. Now the business is heading back to the fairgrounds after more than 80 years away.

Cal Seawell, now a second‑generation leader, joined the family firm after graduating from the University of South Carolina in 1976. He worked alongside his father and two uncles, learning the trade over the years. When the decision came to sell the Rosewood property, Cal faced a tough choice. His brothers were ready to retire, and a developer proposed a 71‑unit townhome project that would raze the old five‑acre site. The emotional weight of leaving a long‑time home was heavy for the family and the staff, many of whom have been with the company for 30, 40, or even 50 years. Cal's son Corey, who has spent 18 years by his side, insisted they keep the legacy alive.

The new spot sits inside the South Carolina State Fairgrounds, where General Manager Nancy Smith welcomes the return. The venue now includes ballrooms, ample parking, full event services, and a fully equipped catering kitchen. According to Nancy, the fairgrounds feels like home again, and the excitement is mutual. Cal and Corey confirm that the menu, the team, and the quality of service stay exactly the same; only the address changes.
