See-Through School Bags: A New Safety Trend
In Charleston, some schools are trying something new to keep kids safe. They are asking students to use clear backpacks.
Not a District-Wide Rule
This is not a rule for all schools in the area. But a few have started doing it. The Charleston Charter School for Math and Science is one of them. It is the first charter school in the district to make this change.
Safety as the Main Priority
The school's leader, Mary Carmichael, says safety is the main reason. She knows some parents might not like the idea. But many understand why it is happening.
Other Safety Measures
The school also has other safety rules. Like not allowing phones during the day. This is not the first time they have taken steps to keep students safe.
Preparing Families
The school told parents about the change early. They wanted to give families time to prepare. The school year starts on August 12. Any student who can't afford a clear backpack will get one from the school.
Clear Backpacks: A Debated Solution
Clear backpacks are not new. Other schools have tried them before. But they are not common. Some people think they help stop problems. Others worry they might invade privacy.
What do you think? Is this a good idea? Or does it go too far?
