Singer Selena Gomez, known for her Mexican-American heritage, took to Instagram to share her emotional thoughts on the immigration sweeps happening across the US. In a now-deleted video, Gomez expressed her sorrow and confusion about the situation. "I'm so sorry for my people, " she said, her voice filled with tears. Gomez, who is Mexican-American, felt helpless but promised to do everything she could to help. "I don’t understand. I wish I could do something, " she said. Alongside the video, she wrote "I’m sorry" with a Mexican flag emoji. Later, she posted again, expressing her frustration that showing empathy wasn’t acceptable.
The sweeps, launched by the Trump administration, resulted in over 1, 000 arrests nationwide. Border czar Tom Homan responded to Gomez's video, questioning why she wasn’t crying for others affected by illegal immigration. He mentioned families separated due to deaths caused by fentanyl and children smuggled into the US for trafficking. The sweeps targeted individuals deemed threats to public safety and national security.
