Senate Leader Slams Anti-Vaccine Move Targeting Polio Shot
USASun Dec 15 2024
Mitch McConnell, the US Senate minority leader who survived polio as a kid, condemned the actions of a lawyer associated with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. This lawyer asked the FDA to revoke the polio vaccine's approval, despite it saving millions of lives. McConnell warned that such moves undermine public trust in proven cures and could be dangerous. He cautioned that anyone aiming to join the Senate should avoid even appearing connected to such efforts. This all happened after the New York Times reported that the lawyer, Aaron Siri, filed this petition in 2022 on behalf of an anti-vaccination group, also petitioning to withdraw or suspend other vaccines. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. , known for his controversial views against vaccines, has been nominated as health secretary by Donald Trump for his upcoming administration, a move slammed by health experts. Polio, a highly infectious disease mainly affecting young children, has seen a dramatic reduction in cases worldwide thanks to vaccinations. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that polio vaccines have prevented over 20 million paralysis cases in children since 1988. In response to the reports, a Trump spokesperson said Siri did not discuss these petitions with Kennedy or any other nominees under Health and Human Services. They also asserted that the vaccine has already been studied and should continue to be.
