Axial spondyloarthritis, or ax-SpA, is a condition that can really impact your daily life. It causes pain, makes you tired, and can make moving around difficult. This can all add up to making it harder to enjoy physical activities, including sex. A recent study looked at how this condition affects sexual activity over five years. The study started by asking people with ax-SpA about their age, medical history, and how they were treating their condition. They also asked about their overall quality of life and their satisfaction with their sex life. These questions were asked at the start of the study and again five years later. A group of 244 people participated, with about a third being women and the rest men. Their average age was 46 years. Over the five years, the study found that while some aspects of their condition got better, like less pain and tiredness, other things got worse, like more health issues and more people needing stronger medicines.
Those who felt that their health really affected their sex life were older, did less exercise, had more health problems, showed more signs of the disease, and felt worse about their overall health and sex life. At the start, the biggest predictors for a negative impact on sex life were being older and not being happy with your sex life. Five years later, the same people still felt their health was a big barrier to enjoying sex. This study helps us understand that health and physical condition can greatly impact sexual enjoyment. It's important for doctors and patients to talk about these issues and work together to find ways to improve quality of life.
