Sex Workers in Congo Town Face Mpox Struggles
Kamituga, CongoWed Oct 02 2024
In Kamituga, a town tucked away in eastern Congo, the mpox outbreak has brought life to a halt for many sex workers. The virus, with its symptoms like fever and body pains, has led to fewer clients seeking their services. Sifa Kunguja, a 40-year-old worker, tells us she's gone from serving 20 clients daily to just five after getting sick in May.
These women face tough odds. They often can’t seek help due to stigma and fear. Many are forced into this line of work because of poverty or to support their families. This creates a nasty loop: they struggle financially and risk their health due to lack of cleanliness and safety measures.
The government has been spreading awareness about the virus, but sex workers want more assistance. They’re asking for financial help to recover from the outbreak's impact and for better info and resources to protect themselves and their clients.
