Shock at shootings in Swedish education center
Tue Feb 04 2025
Students at an adult education center in Sweden faced a terrifying ordeal on a recent Tuesday afternoon.
First, it was a normal day at Campus Risbergska on the outskirts of Orebro, a city known for its historical charm, located 125 miles west of the bustling capital, Stockholm.
But suddenly, at around 12:30 p. m, three loud bangs echoed through the building. People started screaming. The calm was shattered. Five individuals found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time, becoming victims of a shooting.
The center, a hub for learning, offers a variety of courses—from primary and upper secondary education to Swedish language classes for immigrants, vocational training, and programs for those with intellectual disabilities. It serves students over the age of 20, providing a second chance at education.
As the news of the shooting spread, videos from the scene showed a flurry of activity. Emergency vehicles surrounded the area, and a heavy police presence took control. The safety of students was the top priority. Some students found security in nearby buildings, while others were swiftly evacuated from the school.
Among those caught in the chaos was Andreas Sundling, who was 28 years old. He recounted the harrowing moments to a news reporter. "Suddenly there were three loud bangs and screams. We're all waiting to be evacuated. The instructions are clear: stay put and wait. "
A question remains unanswered: is the perpetrator, who reportedly took his own life, included in the five shooting victims? The severity of the victims' injuries is also uncertain.
Importantly, no law enforcement officers were hurt during the commotion. The police were quick to respond, and their operation was in full force.
The government was swiftly involved. The Justice Minister, Gunnar Strömmer, acknowledged the gravity of the situation. The minister for employment and integration, Mats Persson, followed up by assuring the public that the government was keeping a close eye on the situation and maintaining open communication with the police.
Orebro, a city with a population of about 155, 000, was shaken by this violence. For many, it was an unexpected disruption.
Schools should be places of safety and learning. But in this case, they were a place of fear.
This is a chilling reminder that violence can strike anywhere, even in places meant for growth and education.
A vigil has been organized to honor the victims.
Authorities are still working to understand the full details of what happened.
