Shocking Shooting at California Sports Complex Claims NYT Tech Leader

On a Saturday afternoon in Dublin, California, a man was found lying in the parking lot of a sports complex with gunshot wounds. He was Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old who worked for The New York Times. Police arrived quickly after a sergeant spotted him and tried to help, but he died at the scene.

The officers identified the suspects as an elderly couple, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77 years old. They are the parents of McKinsey's wife, making them his in-laws. Both were taken into custody on suspicion of murder and booked into Santa Rita Jail. No other suspects are being sought.

McKinsey had been with The New York Times since 2023, leading engineering work for its Games section. Before that he spent almost twenty years in tech, holding roles at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Oracle, Coursera, UKG and Splunk. At the Times he started as a senior engineering manager for the games platform and later became director of engineering for player experience, helping millions of puzzle fans.

He earned a master's in computer science from UC Berkeley in 2015. The investigation is still active; detectives are reviewing evidence and asking anyone with information to come forward. Police say witnesses helped detain the couple quickly and there is no known continuing danger to the public. Motive has not been disclosed.
