Walking into a Texas elementary school classroom and seeing Bible stories on the curriculum. That's what could happen if a new proposal by the Texas Education Agency is approved in November. The plan suggests including Biblical lessons in state reading and language arts classes. But not all Christians are happy about this idea. In fact, an organization called Faithful America has started a petition against it.
The petition, which now has over 15,000 signatures, argues that teaching the Bible in public schools mixes church and state, something our country's founders didn’t want. They believe this would be unfair to students who don't share the same faith. The petition asks the Texas Board of Education to respect all students' religious freedom.
But what do parents think? Some attended a recent public hearing about this topic. Many were worried that the stories might not fit their own beliefs or those of other religions. They preferred discussing faith in their homes or places of worship. On the other hand, some supporters felt that America was built on Christian principles and thought teaching Biblical stories would help kids understand history better.
So, what do you think? Should Texas schools teach the Bible? It's a question many people are talking about right now.
