Sidama's Gendered Path to Youth Business Dreams

Sidama, EthiopiaThu Oct 22 2026

Youth in Sidama face a tough job problem. Many young people there want a better life. This study asked why. It looked at the mix of gender, culture, and mind power. It wanted to know what pushes youth toward business. It also wanted to know what holds them back. The team said most old studies came from far away.

The study used many steps. It used a survey. It used talks with people. It used a plan made for group life. The survey had 384 young people. Six in ten were female. Their average age was about 24. The team did 12 key talks and 6 group talks. Forty eight people joined those talks. They checked the data first.

The findings were clear on personal push. Self belief helped. Risk taking helped. Being proactive helped. Each one raised the chance of strong business wish. The odds were 2.10, 1.80, and 2.41. All were strong. Yet women showed higher wish than men. The odds were 0.35. That was a surprise. The talks pointed to money needs, safe trade roles, family help, and social shame. The team saw this in the numbers and the talks.
