Ever heard that a cup of coffee might be good for your health? Well, new research is suggesting that this could be true, especially when it comes to certain types of cancer. Scientists have looked at a bunch of studies and found that drinking coffee and tea might actually lower your risk of getting head and neck cancer.
Head and neck cancer is pretty common worldwide, and it's on the rise in poorer countries. In the US alone, around 71, 100 people are expected to be diagnosed with these types of cancers in 2024.
The research, led by scientists from Utah, combined data from over 25, 000 people from 14 different studies. They wanted to see if there was something special about the diets of people with head and neck cancer.
Turns out, people who drank more than four cups of caffeinated coffee a day had a lower risk of getting head and neck cancer. This was especially true for cancers in the mouth and throat. Even decaf coffee showed some benefits, reducing the risk of mouth cancer by 25%.
Tea also had its benefits. Drinking tea was linked to a lower risk of a type of throat cancer called hypopharyngeal cancer. But here's where it gets tricky: drinking more than one cup of tea a day was actually linked to a higher risk of laryngeal cancer.
The lead scientist, Yuan-Chin Amy Lee, said that while we know coffee and tea can help, we still need more data to understand exactly how they work. After all, both drinks are complex, with over 2, 000 compounds in coffee alone. Some of these compounds might help fight disease and inflammation.
Head and neck cancer can be serious, with symptoms like mouth sores and pain when swallowing. The biggest risk factors are alcohol and tobacco use. But this new research shows that your daily coffee or tea habit might just give you an extra layer of protection.
Just remember, while coffee and tea might help, they're not a magic cure. It's always important to maintain a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
