Ever thought about how your skin can reveal insights into your health? Scientists discovered that skin autofluorescence (SAF), which measures glycation products in your skin, is a good sign of aging. But here’s the interesting part: they compared SAF with blood-based metabolomics, known as MetaboHealth, to understand how both relate to frailty. Frailty, you see, makes you more likely to fall and have health issues.
The study involved people aged 46 to 85, using data from the Doetinchem Cohort Study. They used a special machine called the AGE reader™ to measure SAF and calculated MetaboHealth using metabolomics. Guess what? Both SAF and MetaboHealth were linked to being pre-frail or frail. This means higher levels of these markers could increase your risk.
But here’s the cool bit: even after adjusting for each other, both SAF and MetaboHealth still showed a clear link to frailty. This suggests they capture different aspects of aging. Plus, SAF even showed a connection with frailty over time.
So, what’s the takeaway? SAF could be a handy tool to track aging and its impact on health. And combining it with MetaboHealth might paint an even clearer picture.
