Skull Found by Loggers in 1994 Finally Identified After 30 Years

Back in 1994, loggers in California's Sierra Nevada mountains stumbled upon something unexpected at a remote campsite near Putt Lake in Nyack. What they found was a partial human skull, tucked away in the wilderness. At the time, investigators thought the remains had been sitting there for at least a year, maybe even longer. They collected the bones and other evidence, but the case quickly hit a wall. No one knew who the man was or how he ended up dead in the woods.

For years, the mystery sat unsolved. The unidentified man was added to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, with officials estimating he was between 50 and 60 years old. His identity remained a secret buried in the forest. That all changed in December 2024, when Placer County investigators joined forces with the California Department of Justice and a company called Othram Inc. that specializes in advanced DNA testing. Scientists there managed to pull together a full DNA profile from the old remains.

The next step was tricky. The genetic profile was sent to Ramapo College's Investigative Genetic Genealogy Center in early 2025. Instead of just searching for a name, the team worked backward, tracing family trees through DNA matches. But this wasn't easy. The man had Croatian and Yugoslavian roots, which made things harder. Those backgrounds are often underrepresented in public DNA databases, and genealogy records from those regions can be tough to find. Cairenn Binder, who leads the center, said the case was especially challenging because of these factors.

By December 2025, the team had a name: George Krusely. Born on April 30, 1929, he was last seen in California back in 1963. Investigators tracked down a living relative and, with help from the Lordstown Police Department in Ohio, collected a DNA sample. When they compared it to the profile from the skull, it was a perfect match. After more than three decades, the man found by loggers finally had his name back.

Even now, one big question remains unanswered. No one knows exactly how long Krusely had been dead when his remains were discovered. The case may have been solved, but the mystery of what happened to him in those final moments is still out there.
