Smart Emergency Tools May Catch Suicide Risks Early

Suicide kills thousands of people every year and takes away many years of life. Many people who eventually end their lives show up at hospitals before they pass away, but doctors often miss warning signs. This makes early detection really hard because of tight schedules and busy workflows.

To fix this, researchers created the CARES project. Its main idea is to build a simple software tool that can flag potential suicide risks right when someone walks into an emergency room. The team wants to encourage quick, reliable checks and let doctors step in to help.

The project uses machine learning to predict whether a patient might try non-lethal self-harm or actually commit suicide within the next month, six months, or a year after leaving the hospital. They pull data from public health records in Catalonia, Spain, along with electronic medical files. By combining these sources, the model learns patterns that signal danger earlier than traditional methods.
