Smart Fabric Sensors: Tracking Moves Without Wires

Textile wearables that can watch how we move are gaining ground in health, sports and fun. They feel like a second skin because they bend with us and can record data all the time. The ideal design would have no stiff electronics glued to the cloth and would send information wirelessly, so it doesn’t drag us down.
Current fully textile systems usually only read one spot on the body. The new idea uses a simple LC circuit that can handle many stretch‑sensing patches, but still relies on just one coil to talk to an outside reader. This keeps the device light and easy to build.
First, researchers tuned the circuit on a bench to make sure each part worked well. Then they stitched two strain sensors into sporty leggings and asked a single person to perform various poses and moves. The smart fabric was able to tell which activity was happening with high accuracy.
When the data came from a single test session, the best algorithm scored an F1 of 0. 98 for still poses and 0. 96 for moving ones. After repeating the test three times, including putting on and taking off the leggings each time, the scores fell to 0. 86 and 0. 87. Even with this drop, the system still shows promise for real‑time monitoring.
Because it is flexible and has only one transmission coil, the design could fit into everyday clothes. It would let doctors track patients or athletes fine‑tune their training without bulky gadgets.
