Smart Farming Cuts Nitrogen Waste While Boosting Mustard Yields

Farmers have long struggled with too much nitrogen in their fields. Too much fertilizer hurts crops, damages soil, and pumps out powerful greenhouse gases. Nearly eighty percent of agricultural emissions trace back to how we feed our plants. That number keeps climbing as farms spread across the globe.

Researchers tackled this mess head-on. They ran a field test from 2021 to 2024 with nine different nitrogen plans plus one no-fertilizer control. Using satellite data called NDVI, they built a quick guide to tell exactly how much nitrogen each plant needed. The tool, named NERC, lets growers apply just enough without wasting money.

The results were impressive. Plants grew bigger and produced twenty-two point seven five percent more seeds compared to standard methods. They saved eighteen point seven percent less nitrogen overall. Other measures jumped—nitrogen removal rose thirty-four point four percent and biomass collection climbed thirty point two percent. Carbon storage in the soil also went up significantly.

This new method cuts greenhouse gas emissions by roughly eleven point two percent versus traditional approaches. Farmers get better yields without adding more chemicals. The tech shows how smart sensors and real-time data can help the planet while keeping profits high. It proves that smarter farming isn't just possible—it works.
