Smart Planning: How Catalonia Tackles Digital Health Gaps
Digital tools are changing how people get medical care. They can make services faster, cheaper, and better for many. Yet not everyone benefits the same way. Some groups may fall behind because they lack access to the new technology. This uneven impact can deepen existing health and social gaps. Researchers call these influences digital determinants of health, or DDoH, because they shape health chances for each person.
The research team wanted to see which digital factors matter most in the Catalan region. They organized a structured expert consensus process, similar to a modified Delphi approach. First, they compiled a wide overview of digital health elements, finding 127 distinct items that appear or shift with digitalization. Then they reached out to specialists living and working in Catalonia. These experts had backgrounds in digital health, public health, clinical care, social aspects of health, or health equity. They were invited through existing professional networks, a method often called snowball sampling. Each participant rated every item on a five‑point importance scale over two rounds of feedback.
