Winter isn’t known for being kind, and this weekend, the United Kingdom felt its full wrath. Airports across the country had to close their runways due to heavy snow and ice. The Met Office warned of snow and ice covering most of Northern Ireland, Scotland, and parts of England and Wales. Manchester Airport, one of the UK’s biggest, temporarily shut its runways early Sunday as staff worked to clear the snow. They managed to reopen around 9:45 a. m. Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport also faced a similar situation, closing and reopening its runway within a couple of hours. Further north, Newcastle International Airport grappled with heavy snow, causing flight delays. Birmingham Airport tackled the snow overnight, closing for a few hours before reopening thanks to their hardworking teams. Bristol Airport had already closed on Saturday due to bad weather but reopened later, with possible disruptions still on the cards.
Trains in England, Scotland, and Wales weren’t spared either, with National Rail reporting speed restrictions and line closures. Major roads in England were also under severe weather alerts, with National Highways advising drivers to be cautious.
