South Carolina schools have been relying on e-learning days to keep students engaged during winter storms. But did you know these days are limited? Every school year, districts can only use five e-learning days. This week’s snowstorm means some schools are running out of options to make up for missed days.
Schools need to meet 180 instructional days each year. While they have three make-up days and three teacher workdays, the five e-learning days can quickly be used up. Once these are gone, it's up to the school board to decide what happens next.
The board can grant a waiver for up to three more missed days, but this requires a majority vote. Without a waiver, students might need toextend their school days, attend classes on Saturdays, or even give up holidays.
Understanding how schools in South Carolina manage extreme weather conditions helps us appreciate the challenges they face. It also makes us realize how important it is for everyone to be flexible and think creatively when dealing with unexpected situations.
