The Philadelphia area saw a mix of snow amounts over the weekend. Some spots got a decent amount, while others barely saw any. The highest snowfall was in East Rockhill Township, Bucks County, with 4. 9 inches. Meanwhile, Philadelphia International Airport only got less than an inch. The official measurement from the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, Burlington County, was 3. 6 inches.
Reports came from various sources, including weather enthusiasts, automated systems, and the public. These measurements did not include the snow from Saturday. Ski lovers got a treat, especially in Stroudsburg, Monroe County, where they received an extra 4. 2 inches of natural snow. Weisenberg Township in Lehigh County also got 4. 8 inches. However, areas to the east, like the Shore region, saw very little snow, with Atlantic City International Airport reporting just a light dusting.
By Monday night, most places should be cleared of snow. But the real challenge is the cold weather moving in. Meteorologists warn of the coldest temperatures of the season so far, with wind chills dropping to dangerous levels. On Monday and Tuesday nights, wind chills could feel like -15 degrees in some areas northwest of the I-95 corridor. A cold weather advisory has been issued to alert residents.
The reason for this sudden cold snap is a dip in the jet stream, allowing frigid air from the Arctic and Northern Canada to rush in. After tonight, the cold air will intensify. The forecast for Martin Luther King Day is sunny but chilly, with a high of 35 degrees. Overnight lows will drop to around 15 degrees, with winds blowing at 10 to 15 miles per hour.
The cold will stick around for a few days. Tuesday will see a high of only 23 degrees and a low of 10. Some relief comes on Wednesday, with a high of 36 and overnight lows around 28. By Thursday, temperatures will return to more normal levels, with a sunny day and a high of 43. Unfortunately, the cold will return for the weekend, with overnight lows dropping to 13 on Friday and 8 on Saturday.
