USATue Dec 24 2024
Early Tuesday, winter weather advisories covered at least 14 states in the U. S. , with the National Weather Service (NWS) predicting up to 18 inches of snow in some areas. These warnings are issued when freezing rain or snow exceeding two to four inches is expected to cause significant travel issues. As the holiday season begins, millions of Americans are traveling, making the weather forecast crucial.
States under advisories include Alaska, California, Nevada, Washington, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Delaware, and Maine. Snowfall amounts vary, but Alaska's Upper Kobuk Valleys and Lower Koyukuk Valley expect 12 to 18 inches. NWS also warns of heavy snow, blowing snow, and strong winds up to 35 mph, making travel difficult.
California, Maine, and Vermont have winter storm warnings, indicating more severe conditions. Brian Donegan, a Fox Weather meteorologist, notes a 100% chance of a white Christmas for central New York, with expected snow adding to the weekend's snowpack. Patrick Osborn of WABI in Maine warns of slippery roads due to the winter storm warning from 1 a. m. to 7 p. m. on Tuesday in Washington County.
Regular updates from NWS help keep people informed as conditions change. This winter weather could significantly impact travel plans and daily routines.
