Winter has been particularly harsh this year, and it's not done yet. Eight states are now under winter storm warnings and advisories, with heavy snow and ice expected to create hazardous conditions.
Alaska is facing the most severe weather, with up to 12 inches of snow in some areas. The city of Seward, a popular gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park, is expected to receive between 6 and 12 inches of snow, with wind gusts reaching 40 miles per hour. Travel in the area is expected to be very difficult, so it's best to avoid any unnecessary trips.
Wisconsin is also bracing for heavy snowfall, with Door County expected to receive between 4 and 7 inches. Other parts of the state, including Southern and Northern Marinette County, Brown, Kewaunee, Calumet, and Manitowoc counties, are expected to receive between 2 and 4 inches. The snow is expected to make travel difficult, which could be a problem for anyone traveling to Chicago for the NFL Playoff game between the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers.
Other states under winter weather advisories include Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont. These states are expected to receive varying amounts of snow and ice, with some areas receiving up to 7 inches of snow. The NWS warns that these conditions can make travel quite difficult, especially overnight and early morning, when roads are often not cleared or winterized with the same urgency.
If you must travel, the NWS advises keeping an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. It's also important to stay updated on the latest flight information at your local airport or with your airline, as these conditions could impact flights across the country.
